JSON is packaged into a dotLottie archive with a manifest. A .lottie is unpacked and its first animation extracted.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Lottie JSON and dotLottie?

Lottie JSON is the plain-text animation file exported by Bodymovin and similar tools. dotLottie (.lottie) is a ZIP archive that contains the same JSON animation plus a manifest and any image assets, compressed with Deflate. Players such as dotlottie-web and the LottieFiles players load it directly.

How much smaller is a .lottie file?

It depends on the animation. Vector-heavy JSON compresses very well: in our test with a real animation from LottieFiles' public dotLottie samples, a 45.7 KB JSON became a 4.6 KB .lottie (about 90% smaller). Animations that are mostly embedded images shrink less, because images are already compressed — use the Lottie Compressor to convert those images to WebP.

Can I convert a .lottie file back to JSON?

Yes. Drop a .lottie file and TinyLottie extracts its first animation as JSON. Any images stored in the archive are inlined as base64 data URIs, so the JSON works on its own with lottie-web.

Is my animation uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. The file never leaves your device.

Is the converter free?

Yes — conversion is free for files up to 50 MB, with no account required.
